Hello! Rife Magazine ceased publishing new work in July 2022.

We've kept the magazine online as an archive and hope you'll still continue to enjoy all of its contributions from the last 8 years.

Songs that your parents would be surprised you know

Ella gives you the tunes your parents don’t think you know… but do!

“How do you know this song?!”

“I don’t know I just do…”

Have you ever joined in with a family karaoke session, singing that catchy song you heard in the School of Rock that one time, and watched as your parents and older family members turn their heads and gasp as you flawlessly sing every lyric correctly? In a world of mumble rap and diss tracks, they didn’t even know you knew what lyrics were! I’ve made you a playlist and  written about three of my favourite songs that will shock your parents as they realise your extensive music knowledge.

D’Angelo was the guy that girls wanted to date and guys wanted to be in the 90s. His album Brown Sugar definitely helped people get their flirt on back in the day and probably still does now. The neo-soul singer became a super famous sex symbol after his music video for How Does It Feel was released and he has been wooing mums across the world ever since.  His songs have featured in films like Space Jam and TV shows like Entourage , so it’s obvious D’Angelo’s music wasn’t just for lusty mums… but obviously she didn’t notice what it sounded like because of his 90s abs.

This powerhouse of a girl group have been providing us with hot fire R&B songs since 1989. They’ve also written and performed songs that have been the soundtracks to films like Set It Off, featured in TV shows like Ru Paul’s Drag Race and been covered many a time on talent shows like X Factor. Originally a four-piece, En Vogue have sold over 20 million records all over the world and are ranked as the ninth most successful girl group of all time. With that amount of prestige you know that your parents and your Aunt Sue had many a party where the drinks and the En Vogue vibes were flowing!

Those brooding rock songs that mums and dads throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s sang to, argued to and made up to – Fleetwood Mac are a British-American rock band that have most likely provided a soundtrack for a few of your family’s life events. Their songs have been featured on Glee, Big Little Lies and film soundtracks like Forrest Gump and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , which highlights how multigenerational and iconic their music is. Wow your grandma and sing along to Dreams…

Next time you get told off for playing your music too loud and having no taste in music, chuck this playlist on and show your parents wrong and have yourself a dance party! I hope you and your family have a great time getting down to these oldies but goodies.
